The 1994 – 1995 season proved to be a great one for Birmingham City FC as they were crowned champions of the second division. Their first season back in the first division proved to be a mixed bag, they comfortably survived in the tier as they finished it off in 15th position and they enjoyed a brilliant run in the league cup, reaching the semi finals of the competition, only suffering a 3-0 defeat against Leeds United in the last four of the competition.
Over the next two years, Birmingham gradually improved in the first division, they finished it off in 10th and 7th position respectively as they came narrowly close to gaining a birth in to the play offs at the end of the 1997 – 1998 season.
They reached the fifth round of the FA cup in both league season s, suffering a 3-1 defeat against Wrexham in the 1997 FA cup and suffering defeat, once again against Leeds United in the competition. Darren Purse was in outstanding form for the club through out the entire season.
